Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma stressed the importance of a citizen-centric approach to governance during a World Environment Day event in Mawrah village. He highlighted that the true success of development projects lies in the positive impact they have on people’s lives, not just their inauguration. Sangma urged a shift towards recognizing citizens and communities over public officials in government programs.
The event, themed “Inspired by Nature, For Climate, For Our Future,” saw the inauguration of eco-tourism facilities and the distribution of Green Meghalaya cheques under the Payment for Ecosystem Services initiative. Additionally, a plantation drive using the Miyawaki afforestation method was conducted. Sangma unveiled new Eco-Cottages and a Glass House Restaurant at Mawrah Lake, aiming to boost sustainable tourism and create livelihood opportunities for locals.
Emphasizing that tourism success hinges on experience and community involvement, Sangma highlighted the importance of warmth, hospitality, and local participation in destination development. He commended Mawrah village for its transformation from water scarcity and environmental degradation to a model of community-led conservation and development. The rejuvenation of springs, vegetation restoration, and water infrastructure creation have made Mawrah an exemplary case for others to follow.
Encouraging local economic empowerment, Sangma urged residents to establish homestays and tourism-related businesses to ensure that benefits stay within the community. He also advocated for the integration of local farmers and producers into the tourism value chain to bolster rural economies. As the event coincided with World Environment Day, Sangma reminded citizens of the importance of daily environmental responsibility, emphasizing that collective small actions make a significant difference.
