The Meghalaya government is gearing up to celebrate the FIFA World Cup 2026 uniquely by introducing the Chief Minister’s Football Fan-Park in Shillong. This initiative will offer a free public venue at the S.R.G.T. Parking Lot in Polo where enthusiasts can watch selected matches on giant LED screens. The fan park aims to turn match screenings into a community celebration, uniting football lovers from Meghalaya and visiting tourists during the global tournament.
The venue will showcase specific FIFA World Cup matches at viewer-friendly timings for Indian audiences, with kick-offs scheduled at 9.30 p.m., 10.30 p.m., and 12.30 a.m. This setup will allow fans to relish the action in a lively public setting. Entry to the fan park will be open to both residents and visitors throughout the tournament, free of charge.
Apart from live match viewings, the venue will host performances by artists associated with the Chief Minister’s Meghalaya Grassroots Music Programme. This integration of football passion with the state’s cultural and musical heritage is aimed at providing an immersive viewing experience and enhancing community engagement through sports and cultural activities. The government envisions that such public events will further enrich Meghalaya’s football tradition and encourage more young enthusiasts to participate.
Football holds a significant place in Meghalaya, known for producing skilled players and drawing large crowds for local and national competitions. With increased investments in sports infrastructure and grassroots talent development, the state aims to position itself as a prominent sporting destination in India. The Chief Minister’s Football Fan-Park is part of broader efforts to establish vibrant public spaces focused on sports, culture, and community involvement, aligning with the government’s plan to construct India’s largest football stadium at Mawkhnau. This project is expected to elevate Meghalaya’s sporting infrastructure and solidify its status as a key football hub in the country.
