Wailadmiki Shylla, the Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs in Meghalaya, greeted the Trophy Tour of the 135th Durand Cup in Shillong. The state received the tournament’s three iconic trophies after they were flagged off by Hon’ble President of India Droupadi Murmu at the Rashtrapati Bhavan Cultural Centre in New Delhi.
The event in Shillong showcased the rich footballing heritage of Meghalaya and marked the beginning of the Trophy Tour across the tournament’s host cities. The program included presentations on the Durand Cup’s legacy, a special screening of the Trophy Unveiling Ceremony, and a ceremonial display of the tournament’s trophies.
Wailadmiki Shylla emphasized the significance of football in Meghalaya, stating that it is more than just a game but a part of the state’s identity. The Minister officially launched the Meghalaya leg of the Trophy Tour, signaling the start of the tournament’s public engagement activities in the state.
Lieutenant General Mohit Wadhwa praised Shillong’s football culture, highlighting the city’s passion and support for the sport. Shillong will host Group E fixtures of the Durand Cup, solidifying its position as a key host center and a prominent footballing region in India.
The Durand Cup trophies will continue their tour to Imphal after successful stops in Shillong, Jowai, and Tura. The tournament, spanning from July 25 to August 23, 2026, will feature matches in Kolkata, Shillong, Imphal, Guwahati, and Ranchi, with Ranchi making its debut as a host city.
