Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum marked the Cinco de Mayo holiday by asserting that Mexico’s direction should not be influenced by external powers. She highlighted the significance of sovereignty, independence, and the national interests of the Mexican people during the celebration of the 164th anniversary of the Battle of Puebla. Sheinbaum warned that political opponents seeking foreign backing are likely to face failure, emphasizing the importance of self-reliance and national unity.
Her statements come shortly after the US government requested the extradition of 10 Mexican individuals, including the governor of Sinaloa state, for alleged involvement in arms and drug trafficking. Additionally, revelations about two US CIA agents operating in Mexico without federal government knowledge have stirred tensions. Sheinbaum reaffirmed Mexico’s commitment to sovereignty, asserting that the Mexican people will not allow external influences to dictate their governance.
During the commemorative event, President Sheinbaum oversaw the induction of 31,000 soldiers into the National Military Service, along with nearly 800 female volunteers. She urged them to uphold the legacy of May 5, 1862, as a symbol of resistance against foreign incursions and internal divisions, emphasizing the importance of unity and national pride.
