Police and other law enforcement agencies in Mizoram have confiscated methamphetamine tablets worth over Rs 40 crore and apprehended five drug peddlers in operations conducted over the past 24 hours. In the first operation, the Excise and Narcotics Department seized 11.118 kg of methamphetamine tablets in Aizawl, leading to the arrest of two individuals. The banned drugs, totaling around 1.20 lakh methamphetamine tablets, were found in possession of Yahya Hussain (23) and Lalchhuanliana (45), residents of Assam and Mizoram, respectively.
A car allegedly used for drug transportation was also seized during the operation. Preliminary investigations suggest that the drugs were being smuggled from Myanmar to Assam when intercepted. In a separate operation at Dapchhuah Check Post, police seized approximately 1.89 kg of suspected methamphetamine and detained three individuals from Assam’s Karimganj district. The arrested persons, Sarimul Haque (38), Shamsul Hoque (38), and Nazam Uddin (21), were caught with the contraband concealed in a backpack inside their vehicle.
All five drug peddlers have been charged under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, and presented before the Special Court in Aizawl district. Methamphetamine tablets, commonly known as Yaba or party tablets, are a blend of methamphetamine and caffeine and are colloquially referred to as the ‘crazy drug.’ These tablets are prohibited in India. Mizoram shares unfenced borders of 510 km and 318 km with Myanmar and Bangladesh, respectively, with Myanmar’s Chin state serving as a major hub for drug smuggling into Mizoram.
