Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh chief Mohan Bhagwat called for the creation of a national veterinary council to regulate the field, allowing experts to influence policy and standards. Bhagwat, a veterinary science graduate, emphasized the importance of fields being guided by their own experts for optimal progress. He made these remarks at the National Symposium on the ‘Role of Canine in One Health: Building Partnership and Resolving Challenges’.
Bhagwat highlighted the need for harmonious co-existence among humans, animals, and nature, proposing eco-friendly solutions rooted in India’s cultural values to address global environmental issues. He stressed the significance of veterinary practitioners in India’s economic development, urging them to expand their roles beyond clinical duties and become integral to the national economy.
The RSS chief underscored the essential role of animal-health professionals in India’s economic advancement, urging veterinarians to view themselves as societal stakeholders and support farmers and animal husbandry workers. He pointed out that a robust veterinary sector directly bolsters agrarian livelihoods and the GDP.
Bhagwat referenced a recent Supreme Court ruling on stray dog relocation and vaccination, noting the divided public reactions. He suggested exploring expert-driven solutions for such contentious matters, advocating for humane and balanced approaches over extreme measures in managing stray dogs.
Bhagwat emphasized the necessity for humans to coexist with all beings, citing a recent decision on dogs that sparked contrasting opinions in society. He urged thoughtful consideration on living alongside dogs and proposed alternative strategies for managing such cohabitation.
