A momo vendor named Reshu Gupta suffered severe burn injuries after a police constable threw boiling water on her while clearing the route for a VIP convoy in Jaipur’s Jagatpura area on June 19. Representing street vendors, a national organization has appealed to authorities in Uttar Pradesh for justice and support for Reshu, who had moved to Jaipur from Uttar Pradesh to support her family through street vending.
Reshu was operating her roadside stall when directed by police to clear the area for the passing VIP convoy. Despite her plea for two minutes to handle the boiling water in her momo steamer, a police constable’s action caused the hot water to spill on her, resulting in severe burns. The incident, captured on video and widely shared on social media, has sparked criticism of VIP security protocols and treatment of street vendors during such operations.
The organization has urged immediate action from authorities to ensure Reshu’s safety, rehabilitation, and financial assistance. They have also called for the establishment of more planned vending zones in Uttar Pradesh to prevent forced migration of vendors in search of livelihood opportunities. Additionally, the Rajasthan government has pledged to cover Reshu’s medical expenses, provide financial aid, and assist in the family’s rehabilitation.
Reshu, dissatisfied with the government’s response, emphasized her desire for complete justice and highlighted the extent of her injuries. She expressed a need for understanding and support from the government to secure her future. The organization continues to advocate for a thorough investigation, legal accountability, and comprehensive rehabilitation measures for Reshu’s dignified recovery.
