At the beginning of the IPL 2026 season, Mumbai Indians relied on experienced players Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah to lead them towards their sixth title. Despite Sharma’s strong start with a fifty in the opening match, both players have faced inconsistencies throughout the season, impacting the team’s performance.
Head coach Mahela Jayawardene revealed that injuries and niggles have affected Sharma and Bumrah, with Sharma missing several matches due to a hamstring injury, limiting his contributions. Jayawardene emphasized that team selection is based on various factors for each match, with Sharma understanding and accepting the team’s decisions.
Regarding Bumrah, Jayawardene mentioned that the pacer had limited recovery time after the T20 World Cup earlier in the year, leading to a subdued performance with only four wickets in 13 matches. Jayawardene explained that Bumrah’s reduced pace initially was part of a gradual return to form strategy.
