Ahead of the monsoon season, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has put in place a technology-driven plan for the Maha Mumbai Metro network on Lines 2A, 2B, 7, and 9. This initiative aims to ensure safe and uninterrupted passenger services during heavy rainfall and adverse weather conditions. This year holds significance as Metro Lines 2B and 9 will be experiencing their first operational monsoon season.
To enhance operational readiness and passenger safety, MMRDA Commissioner & Chairman Maha Mumbai Metro has directed the strengthening of various aspects like flood mitigation, infrastructure protection, and emergency response. An AI-enabled Automated Pantograph Condition Monitoring System has been introduced on Metro Lines 2A & 7. This system utilizes high-speed cameras and Artificial Intelligence for real-time monitoring of train pantographs, enabling early fault detection and predictive maintenance.
As part of the monsoon preparedness plan, 64 CCTV cameras have been installed at each of the 39 operational metro stations. These cameras, totaling 2,496 across Metro Lines 2A, 2B, 7, and 9, will facilitate continuous monitoring of passenger movement and key operational areas. Additionally, 30 emergency pumps have been stationed at vulnerable spots to address waterlogging risks, with thorough cleaning of stormwater drains and viaducts for efficient rainwater discharge.
MMRDA has completed preventive maintenance activities across the metro network, including insulator checks and maintenance of various components like cables, transformers, and lightning arresters. Standby trains have been readied for deployment during emergencies, with backup systems in place to minimize disruptions. A Disaster Control Room operating 24×7 has been activated for emergency coordination and communication with relevant authorities.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis highlighted the importance of advanced technology in strengthening Mumbai’s metro network for reliable services. Deputy Chief Minister and MMRDA Chairman Eknath Shinde emphasized the quick fault detection capabilities of the AI-based Automated Pantograph Condition Monitoring system. MMRDA Metropolitan Commissioner Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee stressed the integration of technology and data analytics to ensure safe and seamless metro operations.
