Mumbai experienced heavy rainfall overnight as the monsoon season began in the financial capital of India. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for Mumbai and Palghar due to continuous heavy showers. The alert, valid for three hours, warned of thunderstorms, lightning, intense rainfall, and winds of 40-60 kmph.
Severe waterlogging was reported in various parts of the city following the incessant overnight rain. The weather department recorded an average rainfall of 78 mm in Mumbai. In Thane, a tree fell on several vehicles, prompting the response of fire brigade personnel and disaster management staff.
Authorities cautioned residents to be vigilant throughout the day due to the weather conditions. The IMD indicated favorable conditions for the monsoon to progress in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Chhattisgarh, with expectations of more rain in the upcoming days. The southwest monsoon was reported to have advanced into various regions, including Mumbai, Telangana, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and Bihar.
Despite the heavy rainfall, major subways in Mumbai remained open, and traffic flow was largely unaffected. Suburban railway services and BEST bus operations continued without significant disruptions.
