Amid the ongoing standoff regarding the release of hostages from the Naga and Kuki communities in Manipur, both Naga and Kuki organizations have escalated their protests, urging the safe return of those still held captive. The United Naga Council (UNC) postponed its plan to aid in releasing 14 Kuki hostages, demanding the prior release of six Naga civilians reportedly held by Kuki groups.
In a significant move following the abduction of six Naga civilians during the Manipur crisis, Khanuithot-Khon, a Naga youth organization, strongly criticized any attempt to free detained Kuki individuals without ensuring the safe return of the missing Naga civilians. The organization warned the UNC leadership that any repercussions resulting from non-transparent decisions would be the responsibility of those authorizing or facilitating such actions.
Khanuithot-Khon emphasized the Naga public’s right to be informed about negotiations or agreements concerning the missing civilians, stressing that transparency is crucial while affected families endure uncertainty. Additionally, the organization called for a clear distinction between civil leadership and security matters, advocating for decisions guided by accountability and public trust.
Central and state security forces are conducting joint search operations in Manipur’s Kangpokpi, Senapati, and nearby areas to rescue 20 members of the Naga and Kuki communities still held captive by armed groups. The Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM) enforced a shutdown in Kuki-Zo inhabited areas after the killing of three church leaders, causing significant disruptions in normal life. Tensions persist as both Naga and Kuki-Zo communities protest recent violence, particularly the killing of church leaders on May 13.
Manipur government has transferred the hostage case to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) for an impartial investigation. The Commissioner-cum-Secretary (Home) assured strict action against those involved in the abductions, emphasizing the commitment to citizen protection, security reinforcement, and peace maintenance. Stakeholders are urged to assist in the safe release of remaining hostages and to alleviate any economic blockades for public welfare.
