Prime Minister Narendra Modi has completed over 24 years as the head of an elected government, showing a unique democratic endorsement sustained through multiple elections. Akhilesh Mishra, CEO of BlueKraft Digital Foundation, emphasized that in India’s competitive democracy, longevity in power is not easily given but must be continuously earned through public trust. Mishra highlighted that Modi has spent more than 8,900 days as a government leader, surpassing the tenure of former Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Chamling.
Such enduring leadership is uncommon globally, with popular leaders often experiencing changes in power. Mishra noted that even India’s past dominant leaders did not achieve Modi’s level of political longevity. Modi’s tenure is not only long but also marked by renewed mandates through successive elections.
Mishra praised Modi’s governance record in Gujarat, where a post-earthquake period in 2001 led to a governance model focusing on infrastructure, manufacturing, agriculture, and industrial growth. Gujarat’s economy saw significant expansion, with the Gross State Domestic Product growing 16 times and manufacturing contributing nearly 44% to the state’s economy. The state’s agriculture also thrived with an annual growth rate of around 8%, well above the national average.
Narendra Modi’s key political contribution has been a shift from traditional anti-incumbency to a “performance-based pro-incumbency” approach. His leadership has seen national-level advancements like the expansion of digital public infrastructure such as UPI, growth in electronics manufacturing, and a notable increase in defense exports. Mishra highlighted that Modi’s leadership journey signifies not just political longevity but also a broader transformation in governance and public expectations in India.
