More than 65,000 National Cadet Corps (NCC) cadets took part in yoga events at 215 locations in West Bengal and Sikkim since June 18. The celebrations were held in anticipation of the upcoming International Yoga Day 2026 on Sunday. The theme for this year is “Yoga for Healthy Ageing,” emphasizing the youth’s dedication to fitness and well-being.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is in Kolkata and will participate in the International Yoga Day festivities at Red Road on Sunday. The main event for the cadets occurred at the NCC Training Institute in Kolkata, organized by the NCC West Bengal and Sikkim Directorate. Major General Amar Pal Singh Chahal, the Additional Director General of NCC West Bengal and Sikkim Directorate, attended the celebrations.
Renowned yoga practitioner Visharad Anju Mishra led the yoga session for the cadets, focusing on various asanas, pranayama, and meditation exercises to enhance physical fitness and mental well-being. Olympic medallist and Tennis legend Leander Paes, known for his achievements, including the Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri awards, also participated and shared insights on discipline and perseverance with the cadets.
Paes emphasized the importance of overcoming challenges and striving for excellence. The event aimed to promote health, harmony, and sustainable living, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision that led to the International Day of Yoga. The NCC serves as a platform for national integration, uniting youth from diverse backgrounds.
The celebrations showcased the cultural richness and inclusive nature of West Bengal, known for its historical contributions. As thousands of cadets engaged in yoga activities together, the event symbolized a united and disciplined India, echoing the NCC motto of “Unity and Discipline.”
