The National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU) in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, recognized as the world’s sole university dedicated to forensic sciences, has become a leading global center for forensic education, training, and research. Established in 2009 under the leadership of then Gujarat Chief Minister and current Prime Minister Narendra Modi, NFSU achieved the status of an Institution of National Importance in October 2020.
The institution, with 13 campuses in India and abroad, including one in Jinja, Uganda, is contemplating further international expansion following proposals from various countries. Led by founding Vice-Chancellor J.M. Vyas, NFSU has integrated education, research, training, and investigation into its academic model.
NFSU’s high academic standards and eco-friendly campus have attracted global attention, prompting several nations to express interest in hosting NFSU campuses. The institution has enhanced its contribution to criminal justice systems through the development of ‘Mobile Forensic Investigation Vans’ deployed across 17 states and Union Territories.
To foster research and innovation, NFSU has established the Forensic Innovation Council and the Forensic Innovation Centre, facilitating advanced laboratory infrastructure for researchers and start-ups in forensic science. Over 20 forensic products developed through NFSU’s initiatives are now exported to various countries, with specialized patent approvals in India and the United States.
