The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) issued a public apology for a contentious chapter on judiciary corruption in its withdrawn Class 8 Social Science textbook. The textbook, ‘Exploring Society: India and Beyond,’ Grade 8 (Part II), featured Chapter IV, ‘The Role of Judiciary in Our Society.’

In response to the Supreme Court’s upcoming hearing, NCERT expressed regret and withdrew the entire book from circulation. The organization emphasized its commitment to upholding accuracy, sensitivity, and responsibility in educational content.

Following the Supreme Court’s criticism of the textbook contents, NCERT faced scrutiny for allegedly undermining the judiciary’s authority. The apex court ordered a nationwide withdrawal of the book, citing a potential agenda to demean the judiciary’s dignity.

The Supreme Court clarified that legitimate criticism of institutions is acceptable but cautioned against biased narratives influencing young minds. NCERT’s apology was acknowledged, with the court reserving judgment on the sincerity of the apology for a later stage.
