Nationalist Congress Party’s (NCP) candidate Rajendra Jain is poised to win uncontested in the Rajya Sabha elections as the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) chose not to nominate a candidate. Jain submitted his nomination in the presence of senior leaders, including Chhagan Bhujbal, Praful Patel, and others. Despite an independent candidate filing nomination, the MVA opted out due to insufficient numbers, with the deadline for nominations closing on June 11.
The scrutiny of nominations is scheduled for June 9, with withdrawals accepted until June 11. Sources from the state legislative secretariat indicated that the independent candidate’s nomination is likely to be rejected during the scrutiny due to technical issues. The Election Commission of India will be informed that Jain is the sole nominee following the withdrawal deadline on June 11.
Rajendra Jain, a trusted aide of NCP’s Praful Patel, is a prominent political figure in Eastern Vidarbha, particularly in Bhandara and Gondia districts. Patel proposed Jain’s nomination during an NCP core committee meeting, emphasizing its importance in strengthening the party organization for the upcoming general elections. Jain’s nomination received approval from key party leaders, paving the way for his formal election to the Rajya Sabha.
Jain, a former Personal Assistant to Praful Patel, has ascended through the party ranks under Patel’s guidance. Despite a previous defeat in the 2016 Legislative Council elections, Jain’s elevation to the Rajya Sabha signifies his entry into national politics. Jain expressed his commitment to enhancing the party’s presence in the Vidarbha region, aiming to consolidate support.
