The National Commission for Women (NCW) has initiated action after a woman civic volunteer in Kolkata accused an Officer-in-Charge of sexual harassment. The NCW condemned the incident, emphasizing the impact of misconduct by a senior police officer on public trust in law enforcement agencies.
NCW Chairperson Vijaya Kishore Rahatkar has directed the West Bengal Director General of Police (DGP) to ensure immediate action, including FIR registration and a thorough investigation. The DGP has been instructed to provide a detailed Action Taken Report within five days, outlining progress and measures to prevent workplace sexual harassment in police units.
A female civic volunteer alleged that the officer-in-charge of a Kolkata police station in the South Suburban division sexually harassed her. The incident was reported at the end of February, leading to a formal complaint being filed. While a departmental investigation has commenced, no FIR had been lodged as of Monday evening, with further actions pending the initial probe.
The accused police officer has been transferred to another police station within the state, pending the ongoing investigation.
