Nepal has introduced the Foreign Nationals Management Information System (FNMIS) to enhance the safety of foreign visitors and regulate potential crimes involving them. Developed by the Department of Immigration, FNMIS is a digital database that gathers real-time data on foreign nationals from visa application to departure from Nepal.
Various entities such as hotels, airlines, travel agencies, and money exchange services catering to foreign nationals must register in the system for effective monitoring. Initially launched in star-rated hotels in Kathmandu Valley, the system saw over 1,400 tourism service providers, including hotels and travel companies, enrolling by Thursday afternoon.
The next phase, starting from March 1, will extend the system to all star-rated hotels nationwide, airlines, tour companies, and money exchangers. Subsequently, it will encompass all types of accommodations and services provided by public and private entities to ensure compliance with visa regulations and enhance visitor safety.
The primary objectives of this system include tracking foreign nationals in Nepal to prevent potential criminal activities involving them and facilitating swift rescue operations for tourists in remote areas during emergencies. The initiative aims to curb unauthorized activities like cryptocurrency transactions, dating scams, religious conversions, and unauthorized teaching by foreign nationals beyond their visa scope.
