He mentioned Nepal’s increasing hydropower capacity as a significant opportunity for targeted projects aimed at the Bangladeshi market, with India’s support in transmission.
Chaudhary also noted the evolving stance of India on cross-border energy cooperation, emphasizing the critical role of India due to Nepal’s landlocked geography. He stressed that the success of such economic engagements depends largely on India’s cooperation, given Nepal’s geographical constraints. Binod Chaudhary, who controls Nepal’s CG Corp Global and is listed as a billionaire by Forbes, expressed a desire for deeper economic engagement with Bangladesh.
Abdul Awal Mintoo, Bangladesh’s Environment, Forest, and Climate Change Minister, highlighted the importance of neighboring markets in economic development. He underlined the need to prioritize strengthening economic ties with adjacent countries over distant partnerships for sustainable growth. Mintoo emphasized the significance of trade-driven economies and the limitations of relying solely on natural resources for economic progress.
The Minister emphasized the value of enhanced connectivity, energy collaboration, and trade integration among South Asian nations to unlock substantial economic opportunities. He stressed the importance of pragmatic partnerships over political considerations in promoting regional economic integration. Ghanshyam Bhandari, the Nepalese Ambassador to Bangladesh, emphasized the shared economic challenges and aspirations of Nepal and Bangladesh, advocating for closer trade and investment cooperation.
Bhandari highlighted the historic economic and geographic interdependence between the two countries, symbolized by rivers flowing from the Himalayas to the Bay of Bengal. He underscored the potential for expanding bilateral trade through increased engagement between the business communities of Nepal and Bangladesh. The Ambassador emphasized the role of trade as a central pillar in defining the economic trajectory of both countries through enhanced regional cooperation.
