Almost two years after a devastating landslide struck Chooralmala in Wayanad, 51 families who lost everything have found hope in new homes. The families recently moved into a rehabilitation township in Meppadi, marking a significant step towards stability and dignity. These houses are part of a Rs 30 crore initiative to support 105 affected families, with the first phase comprising 51 fully completed, comfortable three-bedroom units.
The residents see this moment not just as a relocation but as the end of a long and painful chapter. Many had been living in temporary shelters, holding onto memories of loss while waiting for a permanent place to call home. The leader of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), Panakkad Syed Sadiq Ali Shihab Thangal, visited the township to meet the residents and fulfill the promise made after the tragedy. He mentioned that while 51 homes have been occupied, the remaining 54 houses are nearing completion and will be handed over soon.
The project, overseen by a dedicated committee, ensured timely delivery and quality construction through regular progress reports. What sets this initiative apart is its funding model, which relied on public contributions gathered through a crowdfunding app. The township, built with high-quality materials and careful planning, symbolizes resilience and community support. For these families, moving into their new homes signifies not just a fresh start but also the reclaiming of a future they once thought was lost.
