Affirming his anti-colonial stance, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani expressed that he would have advised King Charles of the UK to return the Kohinoor diamond, a symbol of British exploitation of India. During a meeting with the monarch at a ceremony honoring 9/11 victims, Mayor Mamdani mentioned his stance on the matter.

Democratic Socialist Mayor Mamdani later encountered King Charles at a crowded memorial event, where videos captured a brief exchange between them. Despite the encounter, the nature of their conversation remained undisclosed, with King Charles appearing composed throughout.

On a four-day visit to the US to mark the nation’s 250th Independence anniversary, King Charles engaged in various activities in New York, including laying wreaths at the 9/11 memorial and meeting local leaders. The Kohinoor diamond, currently part of the Tower of London’s crown, has been a subject of contention, with India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan all seeking its return.
