New Zealand cricketer Glenn Phillips has revealed that his switch to left-handed batting is a deliberate long-term strategy rather than a temporary experiment. During a recent match, Phillips surprised fans by batting left-handed, a move he has been preparing for extensively. He explained that he has been training as a left-hander regularly to enhance his skills.
“I’ve always been able to bat left-handed. It’s something I’ve done since I was young,” Phillips shared with New Zealand Cricket. He further elaborated that training left-handed helps him keep both hands and sides of the brain active and enables him to counteract left arm-spin. Phillips sees this change as part of his future plans and may use it in specific match situations.
Looking ahead, Phillips is part of New Zealand’s squad for the upcoming white-ball tour of India, comprising three ODIs and five T20Is. These matches are crucial for both teams’ preparations for the T20 World Cup in February. Phillips expressed his excitement for the tour, anticipating a warm reception from Indian fans while remaining uncertain about the pitch conditions.
“The preparation is going to be perfect,” Phillips remarked. He acknowledged the potential variations in pitch conditions in India but expects high-quality pitches for the T20 and ODI matches. The all-rounder is looking forward to the challenges and opportunities that the tour will bring.
