Newly elected Congress MLA Zubair Anam Mazumder likened his entry into the Assam Legislative Assembly to a student’s first day at school. Mazumder, who won from the Algapur Katlichera Assembly constituency in Hailakandi district with a significant margin, expressed the experience as novel and emotionally profound.
Having been primarily involved in organizational politics, Mazumder shared that contesting in the Assembly polls was his first foray into electoral politics. He emphasized the uniqueness of the experience, stating that neither he nor his family had prior connections to electoral politics.
Mazumder expressed optimism about his future in public service and highlighted his commitment to addressing public concerns within the Assembly. Dismissing rumors of discord within the Congress Legislature Party regarding the appointment of the Leader of Opposition in the Assam Assembly, Mazumder assured that the selection process would commence after internal discussions.
Addressing queries on the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), Mazumder critiqued the proposed legislation, suggesting that it lacks true uniformity if special provisions are considered for tribal communities. While advocating for equality, he acknowledged the importance of preserving tribal customs and traditions in Assam.
Despite the Congress’s reduced strength in the Assembly, Mazumder affirmed the party’s dedication to serving as a robust Opposition and advocating for public interests. He emphasized the party’s commitment to prioritizing people’s concerns within the legislative framework.
