The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has instructed the Uttar Pradesh Ground Water Department to investigate claims of unauthorized groundwater extraction by private builders, industries, and others in Noida and Greater Noida. This directive follows an application filed by environmentalist Vikrant Tongad, citing concerns about illegal groundwater extraction in various locations, including projects linked to Microsoft, ACE, and Migsun Builder. Allegations pointed to illegal extraction in sectors of Noida and Greater Noida in Uttar Pradesh’s Gautam Buddha Nagar district.
NGT’s order highlighted that the accused parties were not part of the proceedings and emphasized the need for the applicant to lodge a formal complaint with the Uttar Pradesh Ground Water Department. The tribunal granted the applicant permission to submit a detailed complaint with supporting evidence to the department for further action. It directed the department to investigate the allegations, conduct on-site verification, and take necessary remedial and punitive measures if any illegal operations are discovered.
The NGT stressed the importance of prompt action, setting a deadline of three months for the completion of the entire investigative process. The directive outlined that the department should review the complaint, verify the claims on the ground, and address any unauthorized tube wells or bore wells in accordance with the law. The NGT’s order aimed at ensuring a swift and thorough examination of the alleged illegal groundwater extraction activities in Noida and Greater Noida.
