The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken action against the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), Ministries of Electronics and Information Technology and Information & Broadcasting, and Google India. This comes in response to complaints regarding the song “Sarke Chunar” from the movie “KD: The Devil,” which is said to have objectionable and sexually suggestive content accessible to children.
A complaint highlighted that the song’s explicit lyrics are widely available on various platforms, potentially affecting minors negatively. It raised concerns about the normalization of inappropriate content in mainstream entertainment for young audiences. Seeking intervention, the complainant urged the NHRC to investigate, obtain reports from certification authorities, and issue guidelines to protect children’s rights.
The NHRC, noting potential human rights violations related to minors’ protection, issued notices under the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993. Authorities including CBFC, Ministries of Electronics and Information Technology and Information & Broadcasting, and Google India have been directed to investigate the allegations and provide an Action Taken Report within two weeks. Meanwhile, the controversial song “Sarke Chunar” has been removed from YouTube.
