Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari expressed his joy at the progress of the Zojila Tunnel project, stating that the tunnel, initially estimated at Rs 12,000 crore, will now be completed at a reduced cost of Rs 7,000 crore. Gadkari highlighted the tunnel’s significance as a vital link for Ladakh and J&K, emphasizing its construction at high altitudes and low temperatures.
During the breakthrough operation of the Zojila Tunnel, Gadkari commended the dedication of the workforce, with 80% of the staff hailing from the local region. He recalled his commitment to the project, dating back to his tenure as BJP President, recognizing the need for improved connectivity in the region and the subsequent decision to construct the tunnel.
Gadkari acknowledged the pivotal role played by private construction company MDs and the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (NHIDCL) in overcoming challenges during the tunnel’s construction. Despite facing multiple unsuccessful tendering attempts, Gadkari’s persistence led to the successful allocation of funds, resulting in significant cost savings of Rs 5,000 crore.
The minister announced additional infrastructure projects for Ladakh, including the initiation of the Rs 1000 crore Leh bypass within six months. He also unveiled plans for new tunnels and road projects in the region, along with the four-laning of the Srinagar-Sonmarg road and various other road developments in J&K.
