Noel Tata has announced his decision to resign as the chairman of Trent Limited, marking the end of his almost thirty-year tenure with the Tata Group’s primary retail company. This announcement was made at the company’s 47th Annual General Meeting. Tata, a seasoned business leader who will reach 70 years in November, stated that this meeting would be his final one as the company’s chairman, aligning with the Tata Group’s governance rules that mandate retirement at 70 for non-executive directors.
Noel Tata joined Trent’s board as a director in 1998, following its establishment by his mother, Simone Tata, post the divestment of Lakme. He later assumed the role of Trent’s first managing director in June 1999 and significantly influenced the company’s retail strategy. Under his guidance, Trent underwent a remarkable transformation, growing from a single Westside store to one of India’s largest retail networks with over 1,200 stores nationwide. The company also broadened its portfolio notably with the expansion of fashion chain Zudio and supermarket business Star, both becoming crucial growth catalysts.
Reflecting on the company’s journey in Trent’s FY26 annual report, Tata characterized it as a phase of consistent evolution. He emphasized the role of brands like Zudio and Star in fortifying Trent’s position in the retail industry. During his tenure, the company’s financial performance saw substantial improvement, with Trent’s revenue surging to Rs 19,701 crore in FY26, underscoring the significant expansion achieved under Tata’s leadership.
Noel Tata is the half-brother of the late business luminary Ratan Tata.
