North Korea announced the completion of a significant housing project in Pyongyang, building 50,000 living units before an upcoming party congress. The Korean Central News Agency stated that this achievement marked a new era of national rejuvenation. The initiative, spearheaded by leader Kim Jong-un, was introduced at the 2021 Workers’ Party of Korea congress to address housing shortages and improve living standards.
The housing construction project involved the building of 40,000 units in Pyongyang’s Songsin and Songhwa districts in 2022, followed by construction in the Hwasong district from 2023 to 2025. The remaining 10,000 units were recently finished, as reported by Yonhap news agency. Kim Jong-un, accompanied by his daughter Ju-ae, attended an inauguration ceremony for the project’s completion on Monday, where he hinted at future massive construction endeavors.
During the ceremony, Kim Jong-un hinted at upcoming extensive construction projects and significant milestones to be revealed at the ninth party congress. The North Korean leader emphasized the perfect implementation of plans and promised another exciting five years ahead. Participants and attendees for the party congress have already arrived in Pyongyang, according to the KCNA.
Officials in Seoul had anticipated the completion of the construction project before the ninth party congress, scheduled for late February. The upcoming party meeting is expected to outline key policy priorities in the areas of economy, defense, and diplomacy. The Pyongyang housing project is likely to be celebrated as a significant party achievement aimed at garnering public support.
