North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has announced a strategy to construct new munitions factories to increase the output of missiles and shells. This move is seen as crucial in enhancing the country’s war deterrent capabilities, as per state media reports. The decision follows Kim’s recent inspection of a “nuclear-powered strategic guided missile submarine” being built, emphasizing the need for boosting production.
Kim, during his visit to major munitions industry enterprises, directed the expansion of missile and shell production capacity in the fourth quarter. The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) revealed that plans for establishing these new factories will be finalized at an upcoming party congress. Kim stressed the significance of modernizing the munitions industry to meet the demands of the Korean People’s Army.
The North Korean leader highlighted the importance of continuous modernization of the munitions industry to cater to the future needs of the missile and artillery forces. He emphasized the pivotal role of the missile and shell production sector in strengthening the country’s war deterrent capabilities. Kim’s recent military-related inspections are believed to be part of preparations for the upcoming ninth party congress.
Kim’s focus on expanding missile and shell production capacity has raised speculations about potential links to North Korea’s weapons exports to Russia. Notably, Kim has been emphasizing the modernization of conventional weapons and enhancing combat capabilities, especially following North Korea’s deployment of troops to support Russia in its conflict with Ukraine. Seoul’s unification ministry views Kim’s recent military inspections as efforts to showcase defense sector achievements and reinforce nuclear and defense capabilities.
