The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has improved its infrastructure maintenance capabilities by introducing a Rail-Borne Maintenance Vehicle (RBMV). This vehicle is designed to enhance critical track and engineering maintenance tasks with increased efficiency, precision, and safety. NFR’s Chief Public Relations Officer, Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, highlighted that the RBMV will support maintenance operations in challenging railway sections, particularly aiding the Bairabi–Sairang railway project in Mizoram.
The newly acquired maintenance vehicle is equipped with modern features to transport personnel, materials, and maintenance equipment directly to remote work sites. It also includes specialized lifting and handling arrangements for track-related works, component replacements, and emergency restoration activities. By deploying this advanced vehicle, NFR aims to reduce reliance on traditional maintenance methods and enhance operational efficiency, especially in difficult terrains like the Bairabi–Sairang section.
Sharma emphasized the importance of the RBMV in ensuring safe and reliable railway operations in challenging environments. The vehicle’s deployment will facilitate inspections, infrastructure upkeep, and preventive maintenance activities, ultimately minimizing disruptions and improving asset reliability. With safety as a top priority, NFR expects the modern maintenance vehicle to elevate safety standards by providing a dedicated platform for maintenance work under demanding field conditions.
The mechanization of maintenance activities through this vehicle will not only reduce manual handling of heavy equipment but also enhance workplace safety and productivity. The Bairabi–Sairang section, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi last year, features remarkable engineering with tunnels, bridges, and new stations. This project underscores NFR’s commitment to efficient maintenance and safe railway operations.
