The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has played a crucial role in advancing socio-economic development in Northeast India over the past 12 years. With a significant increase in budgetary allocations, the NFR has made remarkable progress in railway infrastructure, connectivity, electrification, and passenger services. Notably, the conversion of the entire metre gauge to broad gauge in the region stands out as a major achievement.
Under the leadership of NFR Chief Public Relations Officer Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, railway electrification has seen substantial growth, covering over 95% of the network with more than 4,170 route kilometers electrified. The introduction of new railway tracks, including new lines and doubling projects, has expanded rail connectivity to key capitals like Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, and Mizoram.
The NFR’s focus on passenger convenience is evident through initiatives like the redevelopment of stations under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme and the introduction of modern train services such as Vande Bharat and enhanced amenities like lifts, escalators, and digital ticketing facilities. Additionally, strategic projects in states like Sikkim, Nagaland, and Manipur are progressing well, promising improved connectivity in the region.
The NFR is actively engaged in transformative projects such as the construction of a new rail-cum-road bridge in Guwahati and international connectivity initiatives with Bhutan through rail links like Banarhat-Samtse and Kokrajhar-Gelephu. Furthermore, the NFR’s commitment to safety, freight development, and environmental conservation is demonstrated through various innovative projects, including the introduction of AI-based elephant intrusion detection systems and canopy bridges for hoolock gibbons.
