The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has introduced the first Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) electric train service in the Northeast, connecting Tripura with southern Assam. Equipped with modern amenities, the MEMU train can accommodate 3,600 passengers and links Agartala with Karimganj in Assam. This marks the debut of the first MEMU train service in the Northeast under the Northeast Frontier Railway.
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha flagged off the MEMU passenger train at Agartala Railway Station, emphasizing the significance of this new chapter in the state’s railway history. The initiative aims to offer faster, safer, and more comfortable travel options in line with modern demands. The MEMU service is designed to enhance daily commuting convenience, providing a modern, safe, and eco-friendly mode of transport.
The Agartala-Karimganj MEMU train will operate six days a week, excluding Sundays, with commercial services starting from July 6. The train features advanced amenities such as LED lighting, bio-toilets, GPS-based passenger information systems, and CCTV surveillance. NFR officials highlighted the environmental benefits of MEMU trains, which are energy-efficient and offer faster station-to-station travel compared to DEMU trains.
The introduction of the MEMU service in Tripura and the Northeast is a significant step towards modernizing railway infrastructure and enhancing passenger experience. The service is expected to benefit daily commuters, students, office-goers, traders, and tourists by providing a reliable and eco-friendly transportation option. The improved rail connectivity is set to strengthen social and economic ties between neighboring states and promote regional development.
