The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has made significant progress in upgrading rail infrastructure, safety measures, and passenger services in the northeastern region in 2025. NFR upgraded 13 pairs of trains to modern LHB rakes, enhancing safety and comfort for passengers. Railway electrification has also seen substantial development, with 3,724.57 route kilometers electrified by March 2025.
Significant strides have been made in electrification works, with 1,141.38 route kilometers completed in the 2024–25 financial year. Division-wise electrification includes areas in Bihar, West Bengal, and Assam, totaling 3,871 route kilometers under NFR. These efforts signify a move towards sustainable and energy-efficient rail operations in the region.
Safety remains a top priority for NFR, with modern signaling and interlocked arrangements at level crossings. Initiatives like the AI-based Intrusion Detection System have been implemented in key elephant corridors to prevent accidents and protect wildlife. NFR’s commitment to safety and environmental conservation is evident in measures that safeguarded over 160 elephants in 2025 alone.
NFR’s contribution to national development was highlighted during the inauguration of development projects worth over Rs 9,000 crore at Aizawl in Mizoram. Prime Minister Modi emphasized the transformative impact of connecting Aizawl to the national railway network on education, healthcare, and employment access. The railway’s role in India’s growth story and regional connectivity under the Act East Policy was also underscored.
In a move to enhance passenger amenities, Haibargaon Railway Station in Assam became the first station inaugurated under the nationwide dedication of 103 redeveloped Amrit Stations. Additionally, NFR’s Railway Protection Force recovered 174 lost mobile phones using the CEIR portal, returning 146 devices to their owners. These achievements showcase NFR’s ongoing commitment to safety, modernization, and regional development.
