India’s Northeast region is increasingly recognized as a crucial frontier for innovation, with a recent summit emphasizing the need for enhanced collaboration to drive innovation-led growth. The Regional AIM SUMVAAD–North East Chapter 2026, organized by the Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) in Guwahati, Assam, brought together stakeholders from all eight Northeastern states to strategize on bolstering the region’s innovation ecosystem.
The summit aimed to chart a collaborative roadmap for states like Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, and Tripura, underscoring the Northeast’s significance as India’s gateway to Southeast Asia. Officials highlighted the region’s diverse offerings, including rich biodiversity, bamboo reserves, traditional crafts, and cultural heritage, which position it as a pivotal player in realizing the vision of Viksit Bharat @2047.
During the inaugural session, Dr. Joram Aniya from NITI Aayog reiterated Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of the Northeast as “Ashta Lakshmi,” emphasizing the unique strengths of the eight states in driving India’s future growth. Sumit Gakhar, Head of Finance at Atal Innovation Mission, expressed the mission’s dedication to fostering collaboration among state governments, innovation bodies, and ecosystem stakeholders to unleash the region’s innovation potential.
Deepak Bagla, Mission Director of Atal Innovation Mission, underscored the Northeast’s talent, natural resources, and entrepreneurial spirit as pivotal in India’s journey towards achieving developed nation status by 2047. The summit saw active participation from representatives of all eight North Eastern State Councils, as well as officials from key departments and innovation centers, discussing strategies to mobilize innovation stakeholders across the region.
Experts at the summit emphasized the economic prospects of bamboo and bio-resource value chains, technology-driven eco-tourism, and grassroots innovations aimed at enhancing livelihoods in traditional sectors. Additionally, discussions revolved around fortifying the region’s incubation ecosystem, with industry leaders and experts exploring ways to establish robust incubators capable of supporting startups from inception to commercialization.
