Norway has detained a Chinese individual over alleged espionage activities, marking the second such incident this month. The suspect, accused of engaging in unauthorized intelligence operations in Nordland, has been placed in custody for four weeks. Denying the accusations, the Chinese citizen’s arrest follows a recent case involving a woman using a Norwegian firm as a front for potential espionage activities related to satellite data interception.
Authorities in Norway have charged multiple individuals in connection with the espionage case, although details about their nationalities and detention status remain undisclosed. The arrests were made following investigations at locations linked to the incident, including the Andoya Spaceport and another site in Innlandet. This development comes after a separate case in February where a California-based political operative was sentenced to federal prison for acting as an undisclosed agent of the Chinese government.
The convicted individual, Yaoning “Mike” Sun, was found guilty of collaborating with Chinese officials to influence US politics covertly. Sun’s sentencing reflects the US government’s stance against foreign interference and espionage activities on American soil. Acting at the behest of Chinese authorities, Sun’s actions included disseminating propaganda, surveilling perceived threats to Chinese interests, and engaging in activities detrimental to US national security.
