Notorious criminal Raja Dutta was killed in a suspected shootout near the Belghoria Expressway in North Dum Dum. Five people have been detained for questioning, but no arrests have been made yet.
Police are reviewing CCTV footage to identify those involved and piece together the sequence of events. Initial investigations suggest that Dutta’s death may be linked to a gang rivalry. Dutta’s body, riddled with bullets, was found by the roadside near the expressway. He was taken to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Two of his associates, also injured, are in critical condition.
Dutta, a resident of Birati in North 24 Parganas district, was riding his motorcycle along the expressway when he encountered a rival group. Investigators suspect that his attackers, who were familiar to him, were waiting for him. Police believe Dutta was armed during the incident, but the motive behind the attack and the exact nature of the dispute remain unclear.
Authorities suspect that Dutta’s firearm was taken before he was shot at close range. The reason for the attack and the specific conflict between the groups are still under investigation. Dum Dum Police Station officers responded to the shooting, transporting the injured to the hospital. Dutta had a history of criminal involvement, prompting police to explore potential connections to past disputes. Efforts are ongoing to track the assailants’ escape route.
Senior officers, including Samir Ahmad, Deputy Commissioner (South) of the Barrackpore Police Commissionerate, visited the crime scene to oversee the investigation.
