NPCI BHIM Services Limited (NBSL) has unveiled a new biometric authentication feature on the BHIM Payments App, allowing users to verify transactions up to Rs 5,000 using fingerprint or facial recognition. This enhancement streamlines the payment process, eliminating the need for entering a UPI PIN for small transactions, thus reducing errors and enhancing user experience. The biometric option can be utilized for various transactions like money transfers, scanning QR codes, and online payments.
Lalitha Nataraj, MD and CEO of NBSL, emphasized the app’s commitment to simplifying digital payments for all users. She highlighted that biometric authentication not only facilitates seamless transactions but also ensures robust security by directly associating transactions with the user’s fingerprint or face. This advancement aims to minimize reliance on PINs while maintaining transaction security.
The introduction of biometric authentication not only enhances convenience but also bolsters security measures. By storing biometric data securely on the user’s device, risks such as PIN sharing or unauthorized use are mitigated. For transactions exceeding Rs 5,000, users are still mandated to input their UPI PIN, providing an additional layer of security for higher-value payments. The feature is currently compatible with Android and iOS devices supporting fingerprint or facial recognition technology.
