Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi highlighted the state’s robust disaster management system during a review meeting in Bhubaneswar. Discussions at the meeting focused on the potential impact of El Niño on annual rainfall and challenges for the upcoming kharif farming season. To address this, the Chief Minister urged various departments to collaborate closely and adopt a comprehensive approach.
A state-level monitoring mechanism has been established to track rainfall, water levels, crop planning, and fertilizer supply. District collectors have been tasked with monitoring fertilizer availability to prevent black marketing and ensure adequate stocks. Odisha’s ‘Zero Casualty’ policy in disaster management has gained global recognition, with successful evacuation operations during Cyclones Mocha and Dana highlighted by the Chief Minister.
The state government has declared untimely rainfall a state-specific disaster to assist affected farmers. Additionally, funds have been allocated for the maintenance of cyclone shelters and the enhancement of disaster response capabilities. Efforts are underway to raise more Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) units to bolster emergency response. The Chief Minister stressed the importance of collective efforts to uphold Odisha’s disaster management achievements and protect the well-being of its residents.
