Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi introduced the Mukhyamantri Annapurna Yojana in Odisha to address hunger issues in the state. The scheme aims to prevent families from going hungry, children from facing malnutrition, and elderly individuals from experiencing food shortages. This initiative was unveiled as part of the BJP government’s second anniversary celebrations.
The Chief Minister emphasized the government’s commitment to public welfare and assisting the underprivileged during the launch event in Bhubaneswar. Under the scheme, beneficiaries will now receive an additional 5 kg of rice free of cost, supplementing the existing entitlements under the National Food Security Act and the State Food Security Scheme.
The Mukhyamantri Annapurna Yojana is set to benefit over 3.28 crore beneficiaries from approximately 1.96 crore families, covering nearly 80% of Odisha’s population. The state government plans to allocate Rs 8,813 crore annually for the scheme’s implementation, considering it as a significant social investment rather than a mere expense to uplift the disadvantaged.
In addition to the food security initiative, the Chief Minister inaugurated three key infrastructure projects in Bhubaneswar and initiated the construction of a 20-storey Janashraya Bhavan for affordable short-term accommodations. Furthermore, smartphones were distributed to Anganwadi workers, supervisors, and block coordinators across the state to enhance their operational efficiency.
