Opposition party Biju Janata Dal (BJD) criticized the Odisha government for a recent incident where a mob of around 40 villagers attacked a young man and a woman from outside the state on suspicion of child-lifting in Rayagada district. The BJD accused the government of failing to maintain law and order, leading to a breakdown in governance. Rajya Sabha MP Sulata Deo highlighted the growing incidents of violence in the state, condemning the attack and calling for stricter measures to ensure public safety.
The BJD expressed concern over the deteriorating law-and-order situation in Odisha, once known for its peaceful environment. Deo questioned the state’s reputation as a peace-loving region following the disturbing assault on the victims. She criticized the government for its alleged negligence in preventing such violent acts and demanded transparency through the publication of a White Paper outlining steps taken to safeguard women in the state. The party emphasized the need for immediate action to address the rising trend of mob violence.
Naveen Patnaik, the BJD president, raised doubts about the government’s achievements amid growing criticism over incidents of violence and safety concerns for women. He urged authorities to take stringent measures to protect women and uphold law and order in the state. The victims, who were NGO workers, were mistaken for child-lifters while using Google Maps for travel. The incident led to a violent confrontation with locals, resulting in the victims being rescued by the police and local residents.
