Opposition parties in Maharashtra have criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent advice on austerity and economic mindfulness following the US-Iran tensions. They argue that the timing of this advice, post-elections, raises questions about the sudden emphasis on ‘sacrifice.’ Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar highlighted the disconnect between the PM’s advice and the challenges faced by the common people, especially amid economic pressures.
NCP(SP) legislator Rohit Pawar echoed the sentiment, suggesting that implementing austerity measures should start with the central government and BJP-ruled states. He emphasized the need for leading by example to ensure effective implementation. Pawar also stressed the importance of consensus-driven foreign policies to avoid potential crises and maintain stability.
Former Shiv Sena MP Priyanka Chaturvedi proposed practical steps for reducing extravagance in governance, such as limiting ministerial cavalcades and scaling down election rallies. Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee President Harshwardhan Sapkal questioned the distribution of sacrifices, pointing out the disconnect between the PM’s appeals and the realities faced by ordinary citizens.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, however, defended PM Modi’s call for collective action to address global challenges. Fadnavis emphasized the importance of prudent resource management to mitigate potential shortages and price hikes. He warned against complacency in resource usage to prevent future scarcity issues.
