Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, has brought to the Election Commission of India’s attention the alleged widespread issuance of fake birth certificates in Gazole Block of Malda district. These certificates are purportedly being used as supporting identity documents during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision in the state. Adhikari pointed out a specific case where a birth certificate referenced a rule from the year 2000, even though it was issued in 1996 when that rule did not exist.
The Leader of the Opposition condemned these actions, labeling them as a manifestation of corruption under the current West Bengal administration. He emphasized that the issuance of false birth certificates is not just an act of incompetence but a deliberate attempt to manipulate identities and disrupt democratic processes. Adhikari also alleged that similar malpractices are happening in other districts of West Bengal, aiming to disrupt the Special Intensive Revision by inundating the system with counterfeit documents.
Adhikari urged the Chief Electoral Officer of West Bengal to promptly investigate the matter and take strict action against those involved in these fraudulent activities. He warned that such actions jeopardize the integrity of electoral rolls and citizen verification, emphasizing the importance of transparency in the democratic process. An official from the office of the Chief Electoral Officer of West Bengal confirmed that they are treating this issue seriously and are looking into it.
