As New Year celebrations unfolded in Greater Hyderabad, a total of 2,731 individuals were apprehended for driving under the influence of alcohol. The police crackdown, conducted between December 31 and January 1, led to 1,198 cases of drunk driving within Hyderabad commissionerate limits. Cyberabad authorities recorded 928 cases, while Rachakonda commissionerate caught 605 motorists.
The Hyderabad traffic police meticulously executed a special enforcement operation from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m. to enhance road safety and avert accidents. The initiative’s main goal was to ensure the safe arrival of commuters at their destinations, discourage drunk driving, and reduce the likelihood of both fatal and non-fatal road incidents during the festive period.
R. Venkateshwarlu, the Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) in Hyderabad, emphasized the force’s commitment to welcoming the New Year without any accidents, promoting responsible and secure celebrations among citizens. Among the 1,198 cases filed, the majority involved two-wheeler riders, followed by three-wheelers and four-wheelers, totaling to 1,042, 51, and 105 cases, respectively.
Offenders were classified based on their Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) levels, with varying degrees of violations. Notably, 175 individuals registered BAC levels between 35 mg/100 ml and 50 mg/100 ml, while others fell into higher BAC categories, with 17 cases exceeding 300 mg/100 ml. The police reiterated their zero-tolerance stance on drunk driving, affirming the continuity of the special enforcement drive and urging public cooperation.
