Pakistan Test captain Shan Masood admitted that his team missed crucial opportunities as they were defeated by Bangladesh by 104 runs in the first Test at Mirpur. This loss gave Bangladesh a 1-0 lead in the series, marking their third consecutive Test victory over Pakistan.
Despite choosing to bowl first on a green pitch after winning the toss, Masood defended the decision, citing the belief in favorable seam bowling conditions. However, Pakistan’s initial strong performance with the ball could not be sustained, allowing Bangladesh’s captain Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mominul Haque to stabilize the innings.
Acknowledging the failure to capitalize on a good start in the first innings, Masood emphasized the need for reflection on both batting and bowling performances. Bangladesh’s control of the match was highlighted by Shanto’s 87 runs in the second innings and Nahid Rana’s impactful five-wicket haul on the final day.
Despite praising the effort of his players after a six-month break from Test cricket, Masood stressed the importance of seizing control in crucial moments. Debutants Azan Awais and Abdullah Fazal showed promise, with Fazal impressing with a composed 66 in his first Test appearance.
While recognizing the potential of the young players, Masood lamented Pakistan’s missed opportunities to dominate the game at pivotal junctures. He emphasized the need for the team to capitalize on chances to assert authority over the opposition.
