Palai in Kerala’s Kottayam district witnessed a historic moment as 21-year-old Diya Binu Pulikkakandam took office as the Chairperson of the Palai Municipality, becoming the youngest municipal chairperson in India. Her appointment signifies a significant generational shift in the town’s leadership, following intense political negotiations within the municipal council. Diya’s rise is not just a personal achievement but also a symbol of youth, resilience, and continuity in local politics.
Her family background adds a political dimension to her elevation. Diya, the daughter of former municipal chairperson Binu Pulikkakandam and niece of councillor Biju Pulikkakandam, belongs to a well-known political family in Palai. The Pulikkakandam family, including Diya, ran as independent candidates in the recent municipal elections and emerged victorious, marking a political comeback after facing challenges in the past.
Diya’s victory is seen as a significant moment of vindication for her family, especially after her father’s removal from the chairperson’s post in 2023. The family’s decision to field independent candidates initially faced criticism but turned in their favor with a clear electoral mandate. Diya, a graduate in BA Economics, entered politics at her father’s encouragement and won the election in Ward 15 with a notable margin of 131 votes.
In a municipality where no political front secured a clear majority, post-election negotiations were crucial. The Pulikkakandam family’s condition for support, ensuring Diya’s election as chairperson, was eventually accepted by the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF). Diya now leads a council that includes her father and uncle as councillors, a unique yet valid arrangement sparking discussions and admiration. She aims to balance her responsibilities as chairperson with pursuing higher education.
Diya’s political ascent also signifies a setback for Jose K. Mani, whose party faced challenges in the recent elections. The electorate’s trust in youth leadership is evident in Diya’s victory, reflecting a shift in political dynamics in Palai. Diya Binu envisions governance focused on vision, inclusivity, and long-term development, setting a new course for the municipality’s future.
