Filmmaker Pedro Almodovar criticized the Oscars for being apolitical this year, stating that the USA is no longer a democracy. Almodovar had previously spoken out against Trump in 2025 during an event in New York City, where he called America under Trump a regime that disregards human rights. Despite concerns about his career, Almodovar expressed no fear in speaking his mind, highlighting the Spanish people’s willingness to address issues directly.

Almodovar, who feels more comfortable expressing his views as a foreign filmmaker outside of Hollywood, emphasized his belief that the U.S. is not currently a democracy. He expressed sadness over the state of democracy leading to what he described as a totalitarian regime. Almodovar also pointed out the lack of protests against war or Trump during the Oscar telecast, with only a few instances like Javier Bardem’s call for “Free Palestine.”

The filmmaker’s upcoming movie, ‘Bitter Christmas,’ is set to compete at the Cannes Film Festival.
