In a part of Bangladesh, a trend has emerged where people are purchasing eggs with broken shells in large quantities, leading to a rise in prices for these damaged products. Previously sold at around Tk 5-6 each, the price for these broken eggs has now escalated to Tk 8, as reported by Dhaka’s Prothom Alo. The demand for such broken eggs has notably surged in the Raiganj upazila of Sirajganj district.
This increase in demand for broken-shell eggs has impacted the market, with prices for these damaged products going up. Shopkeepers in the area have observed a decrease in the sale of intact eggs, with one shop experiencing a drop from selling 3,000-3,500 pieces daily to about 2,000 pieces per day. Low-income shoppers are opting for broken eggs due to the price disparity, contributing to the spike in demand.
The preference for broken eggs among buyers from lower-income groups has led to a price hike for these products, which were previously discarded or taken home by shopkeepers. Customers are now actively seeking broken eggs, with some even requesting sellers to reserve them for later purchase. The sudden surge in demand has caused traders to increase the prices of broken eggs, which were previously sold at lower rates to cater to budget-conscious customers.
