Pep Guardiola is set to announce his departure from Manchester City during the team’s last Premier League game against Aston Villa at the Etihad Stadium. Despite signing a contract extension until 2027 in November 2024, doubts about Guardiola’s long-term future at the club have persisted recently. If confirmed, his exit would mark the end of a highly successful era in English football history.
Guardiola took over Manchester City in February 2016 from Manuel Pellegrini before the 2016-17 season. Although his initial season ended trophyless, it was the only time in his career he failed to secure any silverware, quickly becoming an anomaly.
During Guardiola’s tenure, Manchester City experienced unparalleled domestic success. In the 2017-18 season, they made history by becoming the first team in Premier League history to achieve 100 points, culminating in a record-breaking title-winning season with 106 goals.
The success story continued over the following years, reaching its pinnacle in the remarkable 2022-23 season when Manchester City became only the second English club, after Manchester United in 1998-99, to secure the Treble by winning the Premier League, FA Cup, and UEFA Champions League in the same season.
In the 2023-24 season, Manchester City made history by becoming the first English top-flight club to clinch four consecutive league titles under Guardiola’s leadership.
The news of Guardiola’s potential departure comes amidst Manchester City facing an investigation by the Premier League for over 115 alleged breaches of financial regulations. The club has denied any misconduct, and the investigation is ongoing.
According to reports, former Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca is the frontrunner to succeed Guardiola. Maresca previously managed City’s Under-21 team in the 2020-21 season and later joined Guardiola’s first-team coaching staff in 2022. His familiarity with the club’s setup and Guardiola’s tactical approach positions him as a strong contender for the managerial role.
