Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal praised the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) for revolutionizing India’s e-commerce sector in the last four years. The initiative has made digital trade more inclusive and accessible to all, democratizing e-commerce for various products and services. Goyal emphasized that ONDC has facilitated the entry of small shopkeepers into the digital marketplace, enhancing access for consumers and sellers while building trust in the ecosystem.
Celebrating four years of the Open Network for Digital Commerce, Goyal commended the platform for promoting open participation, innovation, and collaboration in e-commerce. He highlighted how ONDC has empowered small businesses to thrive in the digital space, benefiting both buyers and sellers by fostering trust and inclusivity. The minister underscored the importance of ONDC in diversifying e-commerce offerings and expanding market access for all stakeholders.
The government’s endorsement of ONDC as an alternative to closed e-commerce platforms aligns with its vision for a more open and competitive digital marketplace. Unlike conventional marketplaces, ONDC enables sellers to engage with customers through various buyer apps, eliminating the constraints of exclusive platforms. By providing a level playing field for sellers and enhancing price transparency for consumers, ONDC aims to drive competition and innovation in digital commerce.
Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Jitin Prasada highlighted the positive impact of ONDC on price transparency and product diversity in the digital marketplace. The presence of multiple sellers offering similar products and services on ONDC enhances consumer choices and access to a wider range of goods. With over 1.16 lakh retail sellers from diverse locations currently active on ONDC, the platform has effectively reduced entry barriers for small and micro-businesses, fostering a more competitive and inclusive e-commerce environment.
