Prime Minister Narendra Modi is focused on modernizing India swiftly while maintaining its cultural and civilizational essence, according to Norwegian diplomat Erik Solheim. Solheim, a former Norwegian Minister of Climate and Environment, highlighted PM Modi’s vision of a fast-modernizing India deeply rooted in its heritage, rather than following a Western model. He emphasized that PM Modi aims to blend modernization with India’s rich history and traditions, steering away from Westernization.
Solheim pointed out that Western media tends to portray PM Modi negatively due to a lack of understanding of the significance of culture and religion in Indian society. He noted that while Western institutions view religious and cultural aspects with suspicion, in India, these elements are integral to the nation’s strength and identity. Solheim stressed that PM Modi’s strategy is to shape India’s future based on its historical and cultural foundations, closely linked with the Hindu religion, offering a unique approach to development that balances modernization with cultural continuity.
Discussing the political landscape, Solheim refrained from commenting on opposition leaders, underscoring the importance of focusing on electoral results. He highlighted the Bharatiya Janata Party’s performance in states like West Bengal and Assam, as well as the emergence of actor-turned-politician Vijay in Tamil Nadu, as significant developments in Indian politics. Solheim also praised India’s global stance, noting the country’s commitment to peaceful development and citing the swift de-escalation of a brief conflict with Pakistan as an example for other nations to follow.
